TEDD LiGGETT’s phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1245 \ rEEFER

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1245 - from the “Extended Use” Series ... here is one of the first Reefers, a Refrigerated Railroad Car, developed to carry food & dairy products long distances. This example from 1911 was part of an order of 1000 cars for the Santa Fe Refrigerator Dispatch. Two ice bunkers inside the car held 3 tons of ice, which was replenished every 200 to 400 miles. As a result of this paradigm, California agriculture boomed. These reefers were designed with collapsible ice bunkers that were folded out of the way, allowing the car to carry more cargo when refrigeration was not needed. Also packed with heavy insulation, this particular reefer had special ‘plug’ doors which kept a tight seal when closed. Now housed on Hwy 99, in south central Kansas, north of Olpe, this reefer is now used as a hay barn.
