tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #2003 - Primitive Carousel. circa 1850-1860. This may be the oldest operating wooden carousel in the world. It is believed to have been made before the Civil War and was last operated in a city park in Baltimore Maryland in 1920.

No one knows who built this carousel. The horse bodies are made from logs and you can see the growth rings on the rump and chest. Each horse is made from 8 pieces of wood and there if there were carving details, they were painted on. All metal is hand-forged.

Two men turned the mechanism by hand cranks and the carousel turns on a single ball bearing. Because of the fragility, no one is allowed to ride although museum volunteers demonstrate the machine.

This primitive carousel is on permanent loan to the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum in Leavenworth Kansas from the National Carousel Association in Sands Point, Long Island, New York.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #2002 - Carousel #118 remained in poor condition and all components were disassembled and stripped of old paint. Nails, screws, bolts, strips of tin and bondo were removed. Below layers of paint the horses, rabbits, chariot chairs and the love tub still had their original paint designs.

Any parts that were too badly damaged to repair were replaced and recarved in the C. W. Parker style. The figures were all reassembled using wood dowels and glue instead of nails. Shims and wood epoxy were used to fill cracks and holes. All the original pony’s tail were, and remain real horses hair.

The grand opening of the C.W. Parker Carousel occurred on April 30, 2005 in Leavenworth Kansas and was operated for fun-timers for the first time in over 25 years.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #2001 - In 1997 the C. W. Parker Carousel #118 was purchased by the Leavenworth Kansas Historical Museum Association for $100,000.00. Restoration was done by volunteers for the next eight years. Plans were made for a new carousel museum building in downtown Leavenworth. The museum received a grant from the State of Kansas and funds were raised by sponsors adopting horses & other parts of the carousel.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #2000 - From 1968 to 1971 the C.W. Parker Carousel #118 was placed in storage until purchased by the Frese’s of North Liberty, Iowa for $5,600.00. Jerry bought it for Delores and operated it in his front yard. After the Freses moved to South Bend Indiana they contracted #118 to the Circus Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin (with the understanding that the circus museum would restore and operate the carousel, which they never did.

In 1989 Jerry Frese loaned the C.W. Parker Carousel to the Leavenworth Kansas Historical Museum Association with the understanding the museum would restore the carousel and operate it in a permanent building. Despite many efforts and fund raising, the project wasn’t completed and returned to Jerry Frese in the mid-1990’s.

From 1957 to 1968 the C.W. Parker Carousel #118 was owned & used by the Ce-Mar Acres Amusement Park near Cedar Falls, Iowa. The owners were the McElhinneys and they lived in a house on the grounds of the Ce-Mar Amusement Park until the parks closing in 1968.

C.W. Parker Carousel #118 has a 40 foot diameter and was named the “Special Two Abreast” edition. It was built at the Parker Carousel Factory in Leavenworth Kansas and is on exhibition in the '1st City of Kansas'. This Carousel has 24 horses, 2 rabbits, 3 ponies, a chariot and a spinning Lover’s Tub.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1971 - Walnut Canyon National Monument was proclaimed in 1915 to preserve the ancient cliff dwellings of the Sinagua Indians in north central Arizona.

The canyon rimis 6,690 feet above sea level; the canyon's floor is 350 feet lower. A 1 mile walking trai loops and descends 185 feet into the canyon passing 25 cliff dwelling rooms constructed by the Sinagua dynasty.

Sinagua is Spanish for "without-water" and the tribe were able to thrive in this dry region & became experts at conserving water and dealing with droughts.

The Sinaguas left mysteriously around 1250 CE. It is believed that the Sinagua departed because of fear of neighboring tribes or droughts. The disappearance of the Sinagua left over 80 cliff dwellings behind; small, but large enough for the inhabitants to cook and sleep.

Because of the area's dry climate, the water present in the canyon was essential for its inhabitants over 700 years ago just as it is for the animal and plant life there today.

Plant life is very diverse in Walnut Canyon, with more than 387 different plant species, including Arizona black walnut, Agaves, a variety of Cacti, Ponderosa Pine trees and Firs. High concentrations of sensitive plant species still abound, contributors to the decisions made by prehistoric people to settle in this area.
