tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1275 - In 1879 Carl Bilicke opened the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tombstone, Arizona. His was the first to offer beds, rather than cots. In a few months the tent was replaced with a 2-story building with 50 beds, a ladies sitting room, restaurant, saloon, a merchandise counter AND Tombstone’s first piano. After a shoot-out and a murderous dispute caused by a marital scandal, Bilicke bolted the scene & left for California, parts unknown.

Around them grew small towns, “tank towns” for the railroad employess and the folks who served them. Photographed here is a relic of the well & platform for the tank in west Texas, on the old San Antonio to El Paso trail.

Five months after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1942, 16 sister B-25 bombers flew off the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet and bombed Tokyo, then spent the rest of World War Two bombing Japanese naval and ground units until the cry of ‘uncle’ was heard.
