tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #2085 - By 1907, the Yuma Territorial Prison was severely overcrowded and two years later the last prisoners were transfered to the new Arizona State Prison in Florence, AZ.

The Yuma Union High School occupied the buildings from 1910 to 1914. Starting in 1915 the empty cells provided free lodging for hobos riding the freight trains and provided shelter for homeless families during the Depression. Later the townspeople used the complex as a source for free building materials; this, plus fires, weathering & railroad construction destroyed the prison walls except the iron gates, cell blocks, the main gate and guard tower.
