tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1955 - Blue Spring State Park covers more than 2,600 acres, including the largest spring on the St. Johns River with plenty of picnic areas and a hiking trail. For centuries, the spring area was home to Native Americans. Today the river is popular for swimming, fishing, canoeing and site-seeing.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1954 - Blue Spring is the largest on the St. Johns River and serves as the winter home of Florida manatees that meander to the spring and bask in the warm waters (a constant 72 Fahrenheit/21 Celsius). The area of Blue Spring was acquired by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 1972 to kick-start its Manatee Protection Program.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1953 - The decline of river traffic along the St. Johns River, (due to the advent of Henry Flagler’s railroad) & the great freeze of 1895, resulted in a change of land use at Blue Spring. The Thursby family and other private land owners capitalized on the natural assets of the property by developing facilities for outdoor recreation.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1952 - Louis Thursby arrived here in 1856 and became the first settlers to make a permanent home at Blue Spring. During the early years of Florida development, the steamboat was the only link to the outside world. The boats landed at Enterprise on Lake Monroe, bringing mail and supplies for the few cracker families in the area.

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1951 - Naturalist John Bartram was the first person to leave a written account of the scenery at Blue Spring in central Florida. Bartram was appointed ‘Naturalist for Florida’ by the British Crown and in 1765 he set out to find the source of the St. Johns River. While exploring the upper reaches of this majestic stream he came upon a “surprising fountain”.
