TEDD LiGGETT's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1817 \ sT. jACOB'S wELL

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1817 - a main feature of The Big Basin Prairie Preserve (a 1,818 acre nature preserve owned by the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks) is St. Jacob's Well - is a pool of water never known to have gone dry. This area in southwest Kansas is stocked with buffalo and is open to the public. Geographically, this is the location where the Northern Cheyenne camped and rested during the Northern Cheyenne Exodus in the fall of 1878. The area was not occupied by white settlers at that time, perhaps not even generally known. The efforts to preserve this land began in the early 1970’s.
