tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1710 - During the 18th century American Patriot armies used paper cartridges for their muzzleloading muskets. The paper cartridge combined a pre-measured amount of gun powder with the ball, sealed with beeswax, lard, or tallow, and eliminated the operation of measuring the powder during reloading. Despite the complexity involved in their construction, paper cartridges were used through the American Civil War; eventually replaced by modern metallic cartridges.
