tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1713 - erected east of Houston, the San Jacinto Monument commemorates one of the most decisive battles of world domination - the Battle of San Jacinto, April of 1836. The freedom of Texas, from Mexico (not part of the United States at the time) led to the acquisition of the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Oklahoma. The San Jacinto Monument is a 576 foot octagonal obelisk column (12 feet taller than the Washington Monument) and is capped with a 34 foot tall Lone Star - the symbol of Texas.
