TEDD LiGGETT's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1885 \ gANO eLEVATOR

tL's phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1885 - The Gano Elevator & Scale House was built in 1915 and is still standing, all along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad line, southwest of Kinsley, Kansas.

The grain elevator is a 19th century innovation. Until railroads began the transportation of grain from farm to market, country grain had been stored in flathouses. Grain elevators, built alongside railroad right-of-ways provided storage, marketing and loading facilities for the farmer's hard work.

The Gano Grain Elevator and Scale House was part of a complex that included a dwelling, garage and chicken house. It is now part of the National Register of Historical Places.
