Stretching for over 200 miles this region is bounded to the east by the Blue Ridge Mountains, to the west by the Appalachian Mountains, to the north by the Potomac River and to the south by the James River. Explored (& mapped) by the French in 1632, the Shenandoah Valley became the ‘breadbasket of the Confederacy’ during the Civil War.
