
tL’s phOTOGRAPH_oF_tHE_dAY #1653 - The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, built along the banks of the Mississippi River. This the tallest man-made monument in the United States; a sculpture based on a catenary arch - photographed from the base.
Constructed of 142 isosceles triangle sections, each of the three sides are covered by a 4-by-8-foot exterior sheet of stainless-steel, forming a skin over a sandwich of (more) steel and concrete. Built between 1963 & 1965 (before the advent of computer-aided design technology) the span of the Gateway Arch, at ground level is 630 feet, the same as its height.
